Trees are in important part of the Santa Fe River ecosystem. They slow stormwater runoff, enabling absorption and recharge of the aquifer. Florida’s Arbor Day is in January rather than April, since cooler temperatures are less stressful on plants, making transplants more successful.

In support of aquifer friendly landscaping and the cooling effects of trees, Our Santa Fe River is promoting a tree planting program during our cooler winter months by launching a tree lottery on Saturday December 7th at 5 pm at the High Springs Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Corner of Main Street & Railroad Ave Downtown, High Springs FL. We will be signing people up for the tree lottery, winners will be notified the first week of January.

We are promoting native trees that are acclimated to our region and will match trees to the winners to meet their landscaping needs. We are grateful for the kind donations of trees from the Messersmith Family and Santa Fe Tree Company. Other sponsors are welcome as we want to match as many people with trees as we can.

To sign-up for the FREE tree Lottery, Click Here or on Shades of Green on our website. So far we have Bald Cypress, Southern Magnolias, East Palatka and Dahoon Holly, Southern cedar and Eastern Red Cedar with more on the way. Let us help you rebuild our canopies.
