“Do As I Say…”

The Suwannee Rive Water Management District has issued it annual greenwashing press release regarding April as Water Conservation Month.  Which brings to mind the appropriate adage “Do as I say, not as I do.”

The District is doing its part by implementing projects focused on reducing water use to ensure a sustainable supply of water for people and the environment.

While all those tips in the press release are good and fine, the SRWMD is certainly NOT doing its part, as they continue to  allow pumping of millions and millions of gallons of water from our aquifer while our springs and rivers are dying from over-pumping.

The water saved by the actions in the tips is nothing compared to the excess pumping allowed by the District.

Water Conservation Month to highlight importance of protecting local water resources

LIVE OAK, FLA., APRIL 3, 2025 – For the 27th consecutive year, the Suwannee River Water Management District (District) has declared that the month of April be designated as Water Conservation Month.

Water conservation is at the core of the District’s mission to ensure the sustainability of Florida’s water supplies. Water Conservation Month provides an opportunity to increase public awareness about the importance of water conservation and highlights the District’s year-round water conservation measures.

The hope? It will encourage Florida residents to develop life-long conservation habits that will, in turn, help preserve and protect local and state water resources now and in the future.

“As most District residents rely on the Floridan aquifer for drinking water, it’s important for us to protect this critical resource,” said Hugh Thomas, executive director of the District. “We do this through a number of water conservation techniques, and residents can do their part by simply reducing the amount of water they use on a daily basis.”

The District is doing its part by implementing projects focused on reducing water use to ensure a sustainable supply of water for people and the environment. During the current fiscal year, the District has partnered with other agencies and government entities to award grants for four projects, totaling more than a half million dollars, to support water supply development, water resource development, and conservation. Additionally, the District issued 25 agricultural contracts to implement water conservation.

Speakers, lesson plans, materials, and educational grant funding are all available for schools and community use to further water resource and conservation education. Visit www.MySuwanneeRiver.com for more information.

Some tips on reducing water use include:

  • Turning off the faucet when it is not being used.
  • Repair any leaking faucets or waterlines.
    • Washing larger loads of laundry at one time.
    • Using a dishwasher instead of the sink to wash dishes.
    • Planting Florida Friendly landscape
