Located in the Springs Heartland of north central Florida, the Santa Fe is the discharge point for at least 36 named springs. These springs are pivotal for the environmental health of our state. Major threats to the Santa Fe River include increases in pumping, nitrates, and a reduction in the size of the watershed due to development. The direct results of these threats are reduced water flows and quality which affects the quality of life for all.
OSFR’s mission is to promote the protection of the aquifer, springs and rivers within the watershed of the Santa Fe River. To be successful, we need the support of individuals and organizations to help us protect these resources for ourselves and future generations.
Our work includes:
EDUCATION: Through our newsletter we inform the public of current conditions and possible actions being initiated that need attention and help. We also organize outings and events to introduce people to our river, to clean it up, and to simplyenjoy its beauty.
ADVOCACY: We advocate for our river and springs by getting involved in public meetings, proposed legislation and workshops. Our board members have spoken at numerous public meetings, committee meetings, and rule making agencies.
COLLABORATION: We work with other like-minded organizations such as the Florida Springs Institute, the Florida Springs Council, the Ichetucknee Alliance, the Sierra Club, and others to protect the river, springs and environment.
