Shoals are shallow sections in the river which become more prominent when river levels drop. Floating through shoals elicits a thrill when avoiding the rocks that could catch and tip you out. Sometimes the water level drops to the point where portaging, getting out and dragging or carrying your vessel through, becomes necessary. Shoals are beneficial in a river as they aerate the water, increasing dissolved oxygen, benefiting plants, and the food chain in general.
