Recently the  OSFR board was honored by an invitation to a professionally led hike in order to learn to identify native species of plants growing along the Santa Fe River.

The invitation was accepted by several board members and was led by OSFR advisor Dr. Colette Jacono whose expertise is recognized nationally inasmuch as she if often invited to give expert testimony in major litigation disputes.

The excursion took place on August 14, 2022 at the Blue Trail in the Santa Fe River Preserve, lands recently purchased by The Alachua Conservation Trust. The Blue Trail Hike was a short .75-mile trail with a small portion running along the upper Santa Fe River.  It took about an hour to complete.

The trail wandered through a mosaic of remnant flatwoods community interspersed with residual species of mesic hammock and their common wildflowers such as Pityopsis, Sabatia, Carphephorus, and Rhexia.  Memorable and worthy of note were the native azaleas  ( Rhododendron canescens  ) lining the path to the river which had already formed flower buds for next spring!  Mid-march should be a good time for revisit.  The river had sadly been dredged decades ago at this site and though sparsely vegetated with herbaceous plants did offer home to the river birch (Betula nigra) and a spectacular titi (Cyrilla racemiflora).
Each year during RiverFest OSFR offers similar hikes led by Dr. Jacono.  The venues vary but are always along the Santa Fe, focus of our activities.  Stay tuned for our offerings next March.
