Our first Shades of Green program was launched in response to our 2023-24 strategic plan which included prioritizing Aquifer Friendly Landscaping. Our Santa Fe River wants to empower individuals to make a difference at helping our aquifer.
Aquifer Friendly Landscaping promotes the use of plants that are adapted to our hot, dry, sandy soils, without the need for watering. When we eliminate landscape irrigation, we have a positive impact our aquifer. Almost 60% of residential water use goes to irrigating landscapes dominated by turf grass and exotic or non-native plants.
Native trees improve our Santa Fe River basin; their shade reduces ambient heat, filters and captures rainwater, directing it into our aquifer. This year we promoted tree planting through our Shades of Green Program, matching people to trees.
A world without trees is hot, dry, and inhospitable. Urban areas typically demonstrate the heat sinking capacity of concrete and asphalt. Temperatures rise, air quality suffers, and water becomes scarce, as tree removal precedes desertification.
Thank you to all who adopted new trees to plant. There is one more opportunity to get some free trees. Get a free slash pine and info on tree planting, or just have fun with family activities then come on out for the 2025 Tree Giveaway for Bradford County! Bradford Soil and Water Conservation District, UF/IFAS Extension Bradford County, and the Alligator Creek Garden Club are hosting this afternoon of learning and fun on February 19th from 2-6 pm at the UF/IFAS Extension Office, 2266 North Temple Avenue in Starke.
