Over-pumping and fertilizers is how we go from pristine springs to slime-filled morass. We have had a wet spring so our river is running high but we can go months without rain, which does happen, reducing our river to impaired spring flow, allowing algae to coat everything.

The solution is quite simple: we need to scale back our water usage and stop using fertilizers.
The easiest way to manage both with one act is through our choices in landscape maintenance. Lawn maintenance takes up to 70% of our water use according to the EPA. Alternatives to high water landscapes are included in our link called Aquifer Friendly Landscaping. You might also find the Florida Springs Institute Springs Friendly Handbook helpful.
Other methods of reducing our water usage include bypassing the bathtub and taking shorter showers. There is a laundry list of ideas of how to conserve water at this EPA website called Watersense
You can also help by addressing an action delay through this letter over funding of additional studies, delaying the action that needs to be taken five years ago. This is a time sensitive action so act now.
Finally, you can help by being present for the BMAP’s hearings. BMAPS stand for Basin Management Action Plan. In partnership with SSJ Sierra Club, Florida Springs Council and other organization, we are forming Action Teams for the purpose of raising public awareness as the Florida DEP proposes new rules for the Basin Action Management Plans (BMAP). These rules will affect water quality for our entire region. The activities we are planning will be fun and educational outings to the springs and rivers. Help us protect freshwater rivers and springs in North Central Florida while having fun on the water! This is a hybrid meeting and registration is required to receive the Zoom meeting link.
